KIM WILSON

My inspiration comes from exploring life’s surroundings. Whether it is the textures of nature, geometric shapes or the feelings from within, all are a stage of the creative process.  Since the year 2000, I have been designing small wearable sculptures.  Using sterling silver, gold and semi precious stones, my hand – fabricated pieces are treated with various surfacing techniques such as forging, roller printing and patinas. The results are simple yet complex, industrial yet natural.

I have been fascinated by wood for many years. The range of color, texture and pattern found in woods from around the world provides an almost unlimited creative pallet. Add to this wood’s malleability, and it becomes an ideal medium for creating objects with both beauty and functionality.

Most of my early working with wood was as a do-it-yourselfer, making furniture, cabinets or whatever else we needed around the house.  However, for the past 18 years, I have concentrated on designing and building wooden boxes. A box is the ideal vehicle for combining functionality with the elegance and beauty of wood.

When building a box, I start with the wood itself. I look for unique or interesting color, texture or grain pattern. I often prefer compatible but contrasting woods that in combination create a striking or sometimes subtle visual affect. Once I have selected the wood, then I begin to think of the box that will best utilize and highlight it. Size and shape are adjusted to fit the wood. As a result, even the same or similar design becomes a unique, one-of-a-kind box when completed.

I create free spirited, sculpted art to wear to wake your body and perceptions.
Each piece that comes thru my hands starts out as slivers of recycled fabric, and, just like our lives, changes and grows, bit by bit, until the story is almost complete. Then it's up to you... to fill the bag, or drape the wrap... and open to the next chapter.
